There is no need for extra hardware or dongles to use SoftPOS technology. It is, therefore, possible to take contactless payments via a smartphone or tablet. No specific POS terminals are needed at all. As a result, if you want a high degree of mobility, the terminal-free option is ideal.

Because SoftPOS and terminal solutions are not mutually exclusive, this does not mean that they are not compatible. In reality, Android-powered devices and SoftPOS systems may work together to provide a cohesive omni-channel solution. In the next part, we will go into further detail.

PCI compliance

Because the merchant must meet the standard criteria of PCI compliance for POS systems, SoftPOS software must undergo PA DSS certification. There are no additional requirements or concerns for merchants that use their smartphones as point-of-sale systems (POS). Most small and medium-sized businesses (SME) only need to fill out a standard SAQ for level 4 businesses.

Amount limitations

SoftPOS transactions, like all other NFC contactless payments, are subject to transaction restrictions. Some of these restrictions could be about the number of transactions or how often payments are made.

As a result, being able to type a PIN is sometimes required in order to make or receive payments. To put it another way, PIN input serves as an extra layer of protection. Until recently, SoftPOS systems didn’t enable PINs to be inputted. The new PIN on Glass technology, on the other hand, is becoming more widely available. PINs may now be entered directly on the glass screen of a smartphone using this new technology. That’s why the solution allows businesses to accept higher-value and more frequent payments (without the use of a PIN) using SoftPOS.

But it’s important to remember that some high-value contactless transactions might not work because of security concerns.

Android only

Android-based smartphones and tablets are the only platforms supported by software POS systems at this time. In order to take payments utilizing SoftPOS technology, you must only utilize Android-compatible equipment.

Many Android-based devices have lately hit the market, which is a welcome development. As a SoftPOS program, the software created for Android-based terminals, like Sunmi, may be adapted. Using a smartphone as a payment terminal is possible in this instance.
